Question by moore080693: How can i install my graphics card? I don’t have an anti static wristband?
I have looked on various sites on how to install my new graphics card and nearly all of them say that i will have to “Ground myself” by using an anti-static wrist band so that i don’t damage any components…. Is there anyway that i can Ground myself and install my graphics card without this wristband as i desperately need to install my graphics card and haven’t the time to go and buy one…
Thanks =D

You should be okay as long as you touch a metal part of your computer case regularly to discharge static electricity.

Ha, that’s just being overly cautious- consider it right in line with the old “You can’t swim if you just ate” theory. Just make sure you don’t do anything that will cause a static shock; should be pretty easy. So long as you don’t rub your socks against the carpet of your house for 5 minutes before you touch your motherboard, odds are you’ll be a-okay.

I open my case quite frequently to clean it out and have installed extra RAM as well. You don’t really need the wrist strap. I make sure I’m not standing on a rug and then hold onto the case with one hand first, to discharge any potential static. I then try to keep part of my arm or a free hand in contact with the case as I change out a component or just clean the dust out.
The wrist strap is just an extra layer of protection in case of static buildup as you work on the PC, so I don’t wear anything like wool or polyester that can charge up static as you move around.
I agree the static charge thing may be over rated but it can potentially damage something. If you’re super concerned and cautious you can make one easily with a length of old wire you have laying around the house or garage. Just bare enough wire to wrap around your wrist.

I’ve been repairing & installing parts in cpus 4 along time & U can fry componts real easy if not grounded. 1st disconnect all power wires going 2 ur cpu.Take a copper wire & warp the bare wire around ur wrist & connect the other end 2 a bare metal part on ur cpu that will ground U.
